The shot
Industrial Light and Magic's own history describes a scene in which a pilot is ejected from a helicopter cabin as the T-1000 pours in and takes control, part of James Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgment Day, released in 1991, according to ILM's about page. The Academy's own record of the 64th Academy Awards shows the film won Best Visual Effects, credited to Dennis Muren, Stan Winston, Gene Warren Jr., and Robert Skotak. ILM's own awards record separately lists a Scientific and Technical Academy Award, the MORF System Technical Achievement Award, tied to the same production cycle.
What the documents show
A 2026 VFX Voice retrospective, published by the Visual Effects Society, quotes Douglas Smythe, ILM's computer-graphics shot supervisor on the film, distinguishing the T-1000's material from any real metal: it was, in his words, a poly alloy, a name invented so it did not have to match a particular metal or chrome, built from diffuse and specular components balanced to read as plastic, glass, water, or chrome depending on the shot. Smythe describes dedicated teams, a morph team, a 3D character team, an amorphous-blob team, and a Terminator-death team, rather than one shot pipeline, and the magazine frames the T-1000 as ILM's direct extension of the pseudopod work built two years earlier for The Abyss, a claim made in that later retrospective rather than documented at the film's 1991 release.
The workflow
Morphing a character between distinct physical states, human, liquid metal, and back, required the production to split the problem into named sub-teams solving different material and motion behaviors, then reassemble the results into a single continuous shot. That team structure, credited by name in Smythe's own account, is itself a production-workflow record: it shows how a studio without dedicated shot-pipeline software in 1991 organized labor around the physical illusion required, rather than around one software tool.
What the tool does not change
The credited team's own account states plainly that the underlying tools, early modeling and animation software using bicubic patches rather than NURBS or subdivision surfaces, had to be adapted by hand for each new material behavior. This is an editorial point, but it follows from Smythe's account: convincing morphing in 1991 depended on artists solving surface-continuity problems patch by patch, not on a system that morphed materials as a built-in capability.
