The shot
Industrial Light and Magic's own company history credits artists John Knoll, Lincoln Hu, and Scott E. Anderson with building the computer-generated pseudopod, a water tentacle that mimics a human face, for James Cameron's 1989 film The Abyss, according to ILM's about page. A 2026 retrospective in VFX Voice, the Visual Effects Society's own magazine, adds that the tentacle was built to take on the face of Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, the film's co-star.
