The shot
On 25 June 1963 the United States granted Patent 3,095,304, 'Composite Photography Utilizing Sodium Vapor Illumination,' naming Petro Vlahos as inventor and the Motion Picture Research Council Inc. as assignee. Filed 15 May 1958, it describes recording a foreground subject and a photographic matte in one camera pass by lighting a backing with sodium-vapor light and splitting that light from ordinary light with a beam-splitter, so a single exposure yields both the color image and the matte needed to composite it against a separate background. Vlahos developed the process while working with the Motion Picture Research Council, and it became closely associated with the traveling-matte work on Walt Disney's Mary Poppins (1964).
What the documents show
The patent fixes an inventor, a filing date and a grant date for an examined invention, the strongest single fact available here. A separate technical article in American Cinematographer's October 1963 issue, written by a colleague who describes the study as building on 'investigations which were begun by Petro Vlahos and the author during our association with the former Motion Picture Research Council,' corroborates that Vlahos's traveling-matte research was already circulating in trade-press technical writing before the patent's grant. That article covers blue-screen traveling matte generally rather than the sodium-vapor patent specifically, so it confirms the research existed and was taken seriously by working technicians, without itself citing the patent.
The workflow
Sodium-vapor and blue-screen traveling matte did the job a rotoscoping tool automates today: separating a foreground subject from its background cleanly enough to substitute a new one. The 1958 method achieved that separation optically, in-camera, by choosing a light wavelength a beam-splitter could isolate; a modern masking tool achieves a comparable separation statistically, from pixel data, after the shot is captured. Both routes still require deciding exactly where the subject's edge is and how it behaves against a new background, since fine hair, motion blur and reflective surfaces remain hard cases for either approach.
What the tool does not change
A patent documents an engineered method, not a verdict on how well any production executed it. Neither source supports a claim that this process solved matting outright; the persistence of difficult edge cases through decades of chroma-key and AI-assisted masking is, in this site's own editorial reading, evidence the underlying separation problem is harder than any single technique fully resolves.
