The shot
Industrial Light & Magic's own account of its work on Martin Scorsese's 'The Irishman' describes a purpose-built capture rig, not a software filter. According to ILM's case page, its Digital Human Group 'started developing a proprietary markerless capture system two and a half years before the movie was shot,' combining 'a custom-designed infrared dual-camera system' with 'the director's camera to create a 3-camera rig' called FLUX. ILM states 'until The Irishman, no other feature had ever used this approach,' and that the production required 'all de-aging performances be captured on set, in the cinematographer's lighting, on the day,' with no facial markers, because 'the technology should be invisible.' The film, released in 2019, produced 1,750 visual effects shots on ILM's own count, and the studio states it used 'Machine Learning to aid the artists in finding flaws in the renders,' a review tool rather than a generator of the final image.
What the documents show
ILM's case page is the studio's own account of its process and the strongest available description of what FLUX did and why it was built; it is not an independently audited paper, and the claim that no other feature had used this approach is ILM's own characterization. A separate, independent document corroborates the production's recognition rather than its method: the Academy's own 92nd Academy Awards ceremony page lists 'The Irishman' among the Best Visual Effects nominees, credited to 'Pablo Helman, Leandro Estebecorena, Nelson Sepulveda-Fauser and Stephane Grabli.' That record confirms the production's recognition in the category; it says nothing about FLUX's internal workings, which remain sourced to ILM alone.
The workflow
The practical shift FLUX represents is capturing a de-aging performance once, on the day, rather than shooting a plate and solving the face later with reference photography. The three-camera arrangement gave ILM's artists simultaneous color and infrared data, so the director and actor could work in normal lighting rather than on a marker-covered stage. A human review step remained load-bearing: ILM describes machine learning as flagging render flaws for artists to fix, not deciding what an aged-down performance should look like.
What the tool does not change
A markerless capture rig does not remove the compositing and animation work of blending a de-aged face onto an older-body performance, matching lighting and lens characteristics shot by shot. ILM's page distinguishes younger ages achieved digitally from older ages handled with practical makeup, a reminder that de-aging here was one technique among several. That distinction is this site's own observation, not a claim ILM's page makes directly.
