The shot
Cinerama had its first public presentation in 1952 at the Broadway Theatre in New York City, introduced through the feature This Is Cinerama. American Cinematographer's November 1952 issue carried a firsthand account by ASC member John W. Boyle, who attended the premiere and describes a three-lensed camera recording a scene onto three separate 35mm negatives, projected by three synchronized projectors, one center and one at each side, onto a large, horizontally curved screen. An essay hosted by the Library of Congress's National Film Preservation Board, written by Kyle Westphal, credits the system to inventor Fred Waller, developed from his earlier Vitarama, a multi-projector system Waller had built primarily for wartime artillery training.
What the documents show
The two sources describe the same apparatus independently and agree on its inventor and wartime origin, meaningful corroboration between a contemporaneous trade account and a later archival essay. Boyle's piece adds a public estimate, attributed there to the gunnery-trainer program rather than independently verified here, that the training device 'saved an estimated 350,000 casualties,' and describes stereophonic sound recorded through five or more microphones. The Westphal essay adds the screen's curvature, given as 146 degrees, and the detail that the film played only one American theater, the Broadway, while still becoming, by the registry's own account, the highest-grossing film of 1952.
The workflow
Cinerama's three-camera capture and three-projector composite exhibition is a direct organizational precedent for a multi-camera rig feeding one stitched composite image, a structure now reused in virtual-production volumes and panoramic capture, even though the optical seam-matching problem Cinerama's engineers solved mechanically is solved today in software. Both eras face the same requirement Boyle's article implies throughout: multiple physical camera or projector positions must stay in precise mechanical and photometric agreement, since any visible seam breaks the illusion the system exists to create.
What the tool does not change
Boyle's account is explicit that Cinerama was not sold by its inventor as a stereoscopic process, only as a way to fill peripheral vision without glasses, a distinction this entry preserves because looser retellings sometimes flatten multi-camera widescreen formats and stereo 3D into one category. Whether an image genuinely fills peripheral vision or merely displays at a wide aspect ratio is a viewing judgment a curved, multi-projector screen and a flat single panel cannot be assumed to deliver equally.
