The shot
Coverage is an editorial planning method that predates any generative video tool by decades. A production guide describes film coverage as the total amount of footage needed to communicate the visual purpose of a scene, and states that footage a crew failed to capture is called "missing" coverage, sometimes forcing a reshoot. The same guide breaks coverage into named subtypes: an establishing shot, a master shot that "captures action and allows editors to cut between other shots," plus full, medium and close-up framings, shot-reverse-shot pairs, and over-the-shoulder singles. A companion guide defines the master shot itself as "the continuous filming of a scene, in its entirety, that captures all of the necessary information," so that at minimum one usable version of the scene exists before the edit begins.
What the documents show
These guides describe a planning discipline, not a single generated clip: coverage is the sum of a shot inventory a crew commits to capturing, and the master shot is one deliberately chosen piece of that inventory meant to cover gaps. A generation vendor's own prompting reference, Runway's camera-terms library, documents shot sizes, angles and movements as properties of one requested clip at a time; it does not describe a feature for planning or linking a set of shots into a coverage pattern. Nothing in that documentation claims Runway assembles establishing, master and reaction shots as a connected set, and no equivalent claim appears in this review for any other named vendor.
The workflow
Because no cited tool plans coverage on a production's behalf, the planning step still belongs to whoever writes the generation brief. That means listing, before any prompt is sent, which shot types a scene actually requires: an establishing shot for geography, a master for a fallback take, and whatever medium, close-up or reverse angles the scene's dialogue or action will need in the edit. Each shot then becomes its own separate generation request, described with the framing terms the vendor's documentation defines, so the results can be assembled the way footage from a real set would be.
What the tool does not change
Judging whether a scene's coverage is complete, and whether a chosen master shot can actually absorb an editing gap, remains an editorial decision made by a person reviewing the assembled set of shots. This is an editorial point, not a claim drawn from vendor documentation: a shot list built for a generation brief carries the same responsibility a shot list built for a physical set always has, even though the camera behind each entry is now a prompt rather than a crew.
- Has every shot type the scene needs been listed before any generation request was sent?

- Will the assembled shots read as one covered scene, or as disconnected clips sharing only a description?
Coverage was a planning method before it was a shot list, and it stays one now: naming the pattern in the brief is what makes a set of separate generations behave like footage from a single, planned scene.
