The January release record
On 13 January 2026, Google announced updates to Veo 3.1 Ingredients to Video, its reference-image-based video capability. Google said the update added native 9:16 output, improvements it described as character, background and object consistency, and 1080p and 4K upscaling options. The company said the enhanced capability and portrait format were rolling out to Flow, the Gemini API, Vertex AI and Google Vids; it specified that 1080p and 4K options were available in Flow, the API and Vertex AI. Google also said videos generated by its tools carry its SynthID digital watermark. The announcement described the update as allowing reference images to supply characters, objects, textures and backgrounds, including across changing settings. These are vendor release claims, not independent measurements of consistency, resolution, availability or suitability for a given production.
Editorial workflow synthesis: treat the frame as a contract
A reference image should be approved like a production design decision, not kept as an attractive prompt attachment. Before generating motion, write a compact frame record: aspect ratio, subject position, wardrobe or defining marks, object locations, screen direction, light source, palette and the action that may begin inside the frame. For vertical work, add a safe-area note for faces, text and essential action; a landscape composition simply cropped later may change where a viewer reads the beat.
Review the cut, not the claim
Keep the approved input, candidate output and selected edit as separate assets. Compare the first and last frame against the record, then compare the cut-in and cut-out to their neighbouring shots. A generated clip can preserve a person’s broad appearance while changing a prop, background relationship or gaze that matters to the scene. Resolution is also a delivery decision, not a substitute for this review: inspect the intended crop and final display size before treating a higher-resolution export as finished. Make one reviewer responsible for continuity notes and another for the story beat; a single checklist can otherwise obscure the difference between a stable detail and a meaningful cut. Log each accepted deviation as intentional, temporary or unresolved, and decide whether it must be addressed before picture lock. If a change breaks story geography, revise the shot purpose or replace the clip rather than accumulating exceptions in the continuity notes.
