The shot
The 30-degree rule holds that two consecutive shots of the same subject need a meaningful change in camera angle between them, or the cut will read as a jarring jump rather than a deliberate change of view. A continuity-editing guide states the rule directly: "to avoid jarring discontinuity editing or a jump cut the two different shots must be taken from at least 30-degrees apart," in its overview of continuity technique, adding that the rule matters particularly when a scene is covered with multiple cameras at once. A companion guide's definition of the jump cut describes the resulting error as a violation of the seamless appearance of time and space that continuity editing is meant to preserve.
What the documents show
Both guides describe the rule as a check applied between two shots a person has already decided to cut together, not a limit a camera enforces on its own. A generation vendor's own documentation of camera terms shows the raw material for making that check in a generated brief: Runway's camera-terms reference defines movements such as orbit, "camera circles completely around the subject," and arc, "camera moves in a curved path around the subject," alongside static angle terms like high, low and aerial. None of that documentation states that consecutive generations are checked against each other for a minimum angle difference; each term describes one requested shot in isolation.
The workflow
Applying the rule to a generation brief means stating, in the same vocabulary the vendor's documentation uses, how far the second shot's angle should differ from the first, whether that is a named angle change such as high to low, or a specified arc or orbit fraction around the subject. Because no cited tool tracks a prior generation's camera position, that comparison has to be made by a person reviewing the two results together once both exist, the same way a continuity supervisor would check two takes against each other on set.
What the tool does not change
No vendor documentation reviewed here claims that a generation tool enforces the 30-degree rule or screens a new shot against a previous one for insufficient angle change. Deciding whether two generated shots of the same subject would cut as a jump or as a deliberate change of view remains a human editorial check made against the assembled sequence, not a property either result carries on its own.
- Was the angle difference between consecutive shots of the same subject stated explicitly in each prompt?
- Were the two results actually compared side by side, or only assumed to differ enough because the prompts did?
- Would a viewer read the cut as a deliberate new angle, or as an unintentional jump?
The 30-degree rule was always a check performed by a person comparing two shots, and a generation brief that specifies camera terms without performing that comparison has only described the shots, not applied the rule to them.
