The shot
Shutter angle is a physical-camera setting that ties motion blur to frame rate. A cinematography guide's explanation of the convention gives the governing formula directly: "shutter angle equals frame rate times 360, divided by shutter speed," a term it traces to the angled opening of a rotary shutter disc in mechanical film cameras. The guide states that most cinematographers shoot at a 180-degree angle, which at 24 frames per second means a 1/48 shutter speed, and names Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan as an example of a smaller angle chosen deliberately for a stuttering, chaotic look in its combat sequences.
What the documents show
The guide is explicit that shutter angle itself does not directly cause motion blur; shutter speed does, and the misconception that a larger angle always means more blur is one the guide names and corrects. Generated video has no rotary shutter or exposure window to set, so a vendor cannot document an equivalent physical parameter, and none reviewed here does. Runway's own camera-terms reference instead lists a "whip pan" as an "extremely fast pan that creates motion blur," treating blur as a described visual outcome of a prompted camera move rather than a numeric setting, and its own aspect-ratio tooling documentation separately states that source footage for that tool must run at a fixed 24-to-30-frames-per-second band.
The workflow
Matching a generated insert to surrounding live-action footage shot at a stated shutter angle is therefore a descriptive task rather than a parameter match: the brief can name the desired blur character in prompt language, as the whip-pan example does, but cannot ask a generation vendor to set 180 degrees the way a camera operator would. Checking the result against the live-action plate's actual motion character, frame by frame if needed, is the step that has to happen after generation rather than before it.
What the tool does not change
No vendor documentation reviewed here claims that its motion blur is physically derived from a shutter-angle-equivalent calculation, and this note does not extend that claim on their behalf. Deciding whether a generated insert's motion character actually matches the surrounding footage remains a visual judgment made by comparing the cut, not a setting either side can simply align.

The 180-degree shutter rule remains a statement about a physical exposure window; a generation vendor's prompt language for blur is a different kind of instruction, and treating the two as interchangeable is the mismatch this note is meant to head off.
