The shot
Walt Disney Productions' multiplane camera had its first use on the 1937 Silly Symphony The Old Mill. D23, the Disney company's own archive, credits the apparatus to 'Disney staff members under William Garity,' the studio's chief engineer, and records that its builders received a special Scientific and Technical Academy Award. The device held painted glass background art on separate horizontal planes above the camera, so a shot could move across layers with real parallax rather than a flat painted illusion. American Cinematographer's February 1938 issue independently places Garity at the center of the story, reporting that at a Society of Motion Picture Engineers convention he delivered a paper titled 'The Multiplane Camera,' identified there as 'the one used in recent Walt Disney creations.'
What the documents show
The two sources corroborate authorship without fully agreeing on scope. D23 credits Disney 'staff members,' a studio-wide credit, and separately notes that Ub Iwerks, by then gone from Disney, built his own competing rig using a horizontal arrangement rather than Disney's vertical stand, a detail that matters because some retellings credit Iwerks alone. The trade report corroborates that Garity specifically carried the technique into the industry's own technical record, without resolving who among the 'staff' did which part of the design. Together the record supports a collective, Garity-led studio invention rather than a single inventor's claim.
The workflow
The rig solved a specific problem: moving a virtual camera through a scene built from flat, painted layers without those layers reading as flat. That is the same problem a camera-control parameter in a generation model is now sold as solving statistically. The 1930s solution required physically registering up to six glass planes, lighting each independently, and choreographing their relative motion by hand for every frame, a process the trade report calls 'incredibly complex' for its perspective and timing demands between planes moving at different rates.
What the tool does not change
Depth cueing through parallax is a cinematographic decision about where objects sit relative to a moving viewpoint, and that decision predates any apparatus built to produce it. This is an editorial reading rather than a claim either source states: a tool approximating multiplane parallax in one generative pass still needs a person deciding how much depth separation a shot calls for.
