An editors' honorary society hosts AI talks, not a rule

American Cinema Editors describes itself in its own credo on its About ACE page, retrieved 16 September 2026, as 'an honorary society celebrating excellence within the art of motion picture editing', founded at a 1950 meeting of Paramount editors and distinct from the Motion Picture Editors Guild, IATSE Local 700, which bargains contracts for working editors. ACE has not published a single dated policy statement on generative AI. Its own events calendar instead lists two 2023 public programs that addressed the tools directly: 'The Editors' Lounge: Adapting to AI Across Adobe', held 17 August 2023 in Burbank, and 'Assistant Editors and AI night', held 25 October 2023 at Barnsdall Art Park.

What the documents show

The Editors' Lounge listing is categorized on ACE's own calendar as a members-only workshop, presented with Key Code Education, addressing Adobe's AI-related editing tools; it is programming ACE itself hosted, not a third party's event merely mentioned in passing. The LACPUG listing differs: its organizer field names the Los Angeles Creative Pro User Group, not ACE, and the panel it publicized paired ACE member and editor Zack Arnold with two Motion Picture Editors Guild board members and an assistant editor, to discuss assistant editors in the age of AI. ACE's calendar amplified an outside group's program rather than authoring it. Neither listing states an ACE institutional position on generative tools; both describe programming the society chose to host or publicize for its membership.

The workflow

For an editor weighing an AI-assisted tool inside an Adobe-based pipeline, the practical takeaway from these listings is that ACE's own venue for that conversation has been public programming aimed at its membership, not a written credit or use policy of the kind a rules committee publishes for eligibility. A production still has to look to its own guild contract, or to the software vendor's own documentation, for any binding term; ACE's programming supplies named practitioners to consult, not a rule to follow.

What the tool does not change

An honorary society's public program is not the same instrument as a bargaining unit's negotiated contract language. This is an editorial reading of the record: nothing in either calendar listing binds a signatory studio, and ACE's own credo names recognition and craft advancement, not contract enforcement, as its purpose.
